Symposium Louisville Society for Coatings Technology Presents,THINKING GREEN IN THE BLUEGRASS
A TURF COURSE ON RESPONSIBLY FORMULATING FOR
______________________________________________________ SPEAKER: THOMAS RAULS OF NEW CENTURY COATINGS Soy Ester Solvent, the Future of Coatings With the growing desire to go “Green” the consumer is looking to the coatings industry for viable solutions. Offers of low or no VOC products are the only current offering. Many of these products have been available for years; they are just being marketed differently. New Century Coatings in a cooperative venture with ECO Safety Products has introduced new stains, sealers and paints that meet VOC regulations, reduce petrochemicals, use recycled materials, renewable resources and are fully sustainable. Soy Ester emulsions were developed into coatings to make the best offering of bio based content in the Global market. Plasticization of acrylic resins, deep penetration into concrete and wood offer outstanding adhesion characteristics. This leads to better performance stains and sealers. New Soy Ester colorant lines add water resistance to the stains resulting in better weathering. Perhaps this is not an exciting bit of chemistry, but certainly imaginary. ______________________________________________________ SPEAKER: GREGORY TURCO, PhD OF BASF WYANDOTTE Environmentally Friendly Coatings in a High Petroleum Cost World High energy costs will change economics of the coatings industry. Bio-fuel is not the only answer to this problem. There are others, and they will be described in this presentation. ______________________________________________________ SPEAKER: DANIEL POURREAU OF LYONDELL VOC-Exempt Solvents: A Sustainable Solution for Performance and Compliance In today’s environment, coating formulators must not only mind the bottom line and meet the customer’s ever-increasing performance and price demands, but also consider the health and environmental impact of their products, while staying ahead of the next regulation. In this environment, can VOC-exempt solvents be a sustainable solution to your compliance and performance challenges? This presentation will attempt to answer this question, using tertiary-butyl acetate (TBAC), the latest VOC-exempt solvent as a case study. Included are an overview of TBAC use in coatings, its health and environmental impacts, and an update on VOC regulations and the VOC status of TBAC in North America. ______________________________________________________ SPEAKER: STEVE JOEST OF CARDOLITE Crosslinking with Renewable Phenylalkamines for Corrosion Protection ABSTRACT PENDING ______________________________________________________ SPEAKER: ROBERT MCMULLIN OF BYK CHEMIE Nano Oxides for Wear and Scratch ABSTRACT PENDING ______________________________________________________ SPEAKER: DANIEL POURREAU OF LYONDELL A PRIMER ON INDOOR AIR QUALITY, FORMULATIONS, SOLVENTS AND SUBSTRATES. Air quality concerns have moved indoors. Having addressed the impact of VOCs on outdoor air quality, regulators and consumers are now focusing their attention on the potential impact of residual emissions inside the house. This presentation will provide an introduction to indoor air quality concerns, test methods and modeling, and compare the emission profiles from solvent- and water-based paints. New data on TBAC-based paints will also be presented. ______________________________________________________ SPEAKER: DR. MARILYN BLACK OF GREENGUARD An Update of Greenguard Certification Programs Dr, Marilyn Black, founder of the Greenguard Environmental Institute will review the current certification programs for low emitting construction materials, indoor finishes and furnishings. The certification process will be discussed along with environmental chamber testing and interpretation of results. A case study will be presented demonstrating the improvement in product performance and positive impact of certified products on the indoor air. ______________________________________________________ SPEAKER: JEFF SMITH OF THE US GREEN BUILDING COUNCIL LEED Certification A representative selected by the US Green Building Council will update attendees on the current LEED certification programs for indoor and outdoor building products.
