February Virtual Learning Conferences
The FSCT continues its 2006 schedule of Virtual Learning Conferences with a two-part course on Coating Defect Identification and Prevention. Scheduled for February 9 and February 23 these courses may be taken separately or as a series. The instructor for both courses is Clifford K. Schoff, of Schoff Associates. Register by February 3 to receive Discounted Rates.

Coatings Defect Identification and Prevention I: Application Defects
Thursday, February 9, 2006; 2:00 pm to 3:30 pm (ET)

Defects that occur as a coating is applied or soon after application, such as craters, dewetting, telegraphing, popping, air entrapment, dirt, seeds, and sagging, are the focus of this session. A number of defects are described and illustrated, their mechanisms are discussed, and techniques for their identification are reviewed. In addition, strategies for establishing root causes of specific problems are presented along with advice on how to prevent or reduce the occurrence of the defects. The often-difficult task of testing to see whether the chosen countermeasures are effective is addressed. The presentation concludes with a series of case histories of defect problems.

Coatings Defect Identification and Prevention II: Field Defects
Thursday, February 23, 2006; 2:00 pm to 3:30 pm (EDT)

This session covers in-use defects, particularly those that occur or become worse after outdoor exposure. Examples include loss of gloss, chalking, blistering, acid etch and water spotting, cracking, lifting, peeling, fading, and corrosion. The role of weathering in such defects is considered. Techniques for characterizing defects and establishing their causes are reviewed and strategies for prevention are discussed. Several case histories are presented.

Learning Objectives, Parts I and II

  • Become knowledgeable about the different kinds of defects and how they occur
  • Learn techniques for identifying defects and establishing their root causes
  • Learn strategies for the prevention or reduction of defects
  • Learn about testing for resistance to defect formation (robustness)

Part I mainly uses baked coatings as examples, but the information in the course is relevant to air dry coatings as well. Part II discusses defects found in virtually all coatings that receive outdoor exposure and some that are used indoors (appliance coatings, for example).

Who Should Attend : These conferences will benefit R&D personnel involved in defect analysis and prevention, technical managers, paint formulators, technical service people, paint users and raw material suppliers, particularly those who supply additives.

About the Instructor: Clifford Schoff became a consultant after 30 years of doing research and problem solving for PPG Industries, Inc. At PPG, he performed research and problem solving in the areas of surface defects, liquid and solid rheology, corrosion, pigment dispersion, and the physical chemistry of electrodeposition coatings. In addition to lab work, he has spent a considerable amount of time in auto and motorcycle plants observing paint application and problems first-hand and working to reduce dirt and surface defects and to improve appearance. His column on coatings defects, “Coatings Clinic,” has been appearing in JCT CoatingsTech since April 2004.

Back on Track in the Big Easy!

Please consider attending the 33nd Annual International Waterborne, Higher Solids, and Powder Coatings Symposium, hosted by The University of Southern Mississippi, which will be held at the New Orleans Marriott on February 22-24, 2006.  The Symposium technical program (see http://www.psrc.usm.edu/waterborne/) consists of 29 lectures and a poster session, and is accompanied by a two-day Technology Showcase consisting of tabletop technical exhibits.  The meeting should be both informative and enjoyable, and this is a great way for you and your company to support the academic programs in Polymer Science at USM.  In spite of the damage to New Orleans caused by Hurricane Katrina, the New Orleans Marriott and surrounding French Quarter are fully restored and “back on track” for the meeting.

If you do plan to attend, we encourage you to stay in the Symposium hotel, the New Orleans Marriott, 555 Canal Street.  Marriott reservations should be made as soon as possible; please call 1-800-654-3990 and indicate that you are with the Waterborne Symposium.  If you have problems making your reservation please contact Laura Fosselman, Waterborne Coordinator at 601-266-4475.
